even new wines are ready for your shopping cart – here are Ole Sommelier's tips on what you should pick up this summer.

Summer's Best New Arrivals at Vinmonopolet

It's July, the sun is shining (at least occasionally), and Vinmonopolet has brought in seven new products to the selection. No price drops this week, but among the new arrivals there are some real gems that are perfect for barbecue evenings, the terrace, and lazy summer days. Let me take you through the favourites.

Start with something fresh and white

If you're looking for a white wine that tastes like a quick trip to the Portuguese Atlantic coast, you should take a closer look at Pequenos Rebentos O Caminho Alvarinho 2022 at 369 kr. The Alvarinho grape variety is known for producing wines with fresh acidity, citrus character, and a slight salty edge – think lemonade made by a grown-up. It pairs beautifully with grilled fish, prawns, or simply as an evening drink when you want something that actually quenches your thirst.
If you're curious about something a little different, Pizzato Semillon at 392 kr could be worth a try. Semillon is a grape variety that many people aren't so familiar with, but it tends to produce a full-bodied, slightly waxy white wine with hints of honey and peach. Imagine a ripe summer fruit bowl in a glass. Great with chicken on the grill or a creamy pasta salad.
For those who want to try something British – yes, you read that right – Henners Gardner Street Classic at 299.90 kr has made its entrance. English white wine has impressed more and more people in recent years, and at a pleasant price this is a fine opportunity to get acquainted with the style. Expect something fresh and crisp, likely with a hint of green apple.

Red wine for the grilled meat

There is of course room for red wine even in summer. When the ribs or burgers hit the grill, you'll want something that can handle a bit of smoke and juice.
Michele Chiarlo Piemonte Barbera at 539.90 kr is a safe choice from the Italian wine region of Piemonte. Barbera is a grape variety that delivers juicy, dark berry flavours with good acidity – it's a bit like biting into a dark cherry. It isn't heavy, which actually makes it quite versatile in the summer heat. Serve it lightly chilled, around 16 degrees.

If you really want to impress your guests, Combier Crozes-Hermitage Cuveé Laurent Combier 2023 at 699.90 kr is the big highlight of the week. Crozes-Hermitage is from the Rhône Valley in France, and here it's all about Syrah. That means pepper, blueberry, a hint of smoke, and an elegant fullness. This is not an everyday wine for everyone, but a bottle you open with a certain sense of occasion – perhaps when someone deserves a little extra praise around the barbecue table.

No price drops, but plenty of reason to shop anyway

There are no price drops this week, but with a range spanning from fresh Portuguese white wine to classic French red, there is much to look forward to. My recommendation for the weekend: grab the Alvarinho and one of the reds, and you're well set no matter what ends up on the plate.
Remember that availability may vary between stores, so it may be worth checking whether the product is available at your nearest store.
Cheers – and enjoy the summer!
